Paul Brackel

Company: Open Mobiel Internet
Job title: Chairman

Introduction

Paul is a Dutch national who retired in 2006 from Unilever after 30+ year ‘never a dull moment’ career in ICT and Finance. Subsequently, he started a career as an independent consultant. In this capacity he is working for a couple of national and international organizations. In his private time, Paul is president of the local Kiwanis service club and chairs 2 other local groups.

Open Mobile Internet

Under auspices of ECP.NL (www.ecp.nl), ‘platform for e-Nederland’, Paul chairs and runs the ‘Open Mobile Internet’ initiative (OMI2). A consortium of content providers, led by Rabobank, started mid 2006 the Open Mobiel Internet initiative because they saw a stagnating growth of consumers on ‘internet on your mobile phone’. Walled gardens maintained by operators clearly were a prime contributor as well as lack of cost transparency for consumers, and lack of standards and quality content. OMI2 is an alliance between MNO’s, content providers and service providers working in harmony to take away remaining barriers to transparency and openness to enable innovation. Topics dealt with are standards, consumer price transparency, ready-for-mobile content, micro-payments systems and awareness campaigns.
